Survival court
The Survival course at the Blue Lake Centre.
Survival is a hot item in the Netherlands, and it will be the latest craze in Canada. For sure it’s a quick growing kind of sport.
What is it like? It's a kind of a low rope course. On Blue Lake not higher than 2.5 metre but you need a lot of rope climb techniques to do the course. Total length of the course is 2,000 metre with about 25 obstacles. To do the course it will take about 2 hours including warming up..
It’s a rather new sport, developed in the Netherlands end of the eighties last century in the city of Beltrum. After a couple of years in a lot of villages mainly around Beltrum and later further in the Netherlands a competition started. From 25 athletes in the beginning of the nineties now thousands of competitors are dealing with this sport in a real competition. There is a competition in Belgium and Austria. But also athletes from France and Germany participate in the Dutch runs, that’s how the competition is called.
At Blue Lake a short but intensive training course has been build by the owner. They spend about 3,000 metre of rope.
The first obstacle is a long “Monkeyhang”. Hanging on your arms/hands and legs you climb/walk upside down along the rope over a length of 60 meters. In a horizontal rope it’s difficult but this one goes also uphill. A killer for sure.
After you reached the top of the hill you go downhill and have to do about ten somersaults over horizontal beams which are mounted higher and higher. In between a swing over. Peace of cake if you are used to it, but you can do them five or ten times without touching the floor by your feet just by hand. Then a rest for about 1 minute so you can run to the next obstacle uphill. Because of the somersaults you run a bit disorientated and confused to the next obstacle: the balance beam between a couple of trees. You have to react quick, concentration now for just 20 metre!!
This is going on up to 20 or 25 obstacles. You have to run with a tree trunk over 300 meter, kayak ½ a mile and then another rope is waiting. A postmanswalk a kind of a balance obstacle too.
There is a record on the course set by a Hinton woman. Can you do better then that?
